Typhoon Tapah: Hong Kong Schools Closed Monday, September 8

All local and international schools in Hong Kong will be closed today (Monday, September 8) after a Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.8 – the city’s third-highest warning – was issued.

The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No 8, and the signal will remain in force until at least 11am today (September 8). Tropical Cyclone Tapah is expected to pass within 200km of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong’s Education Bureau said that classes of all day schools, including secondary schools, primary schools, special schools, kindergartens, and kindergarten/childcare centres, are suspended for the day.

Schools have also been closed in Macao and south China’s Guangdong Province today.

Classes of evening schools will resume tonight (September 8) following an announcement by the EDB today.

Will Hong Kong schools reopen on Tuesday, September 9? There has been no announcement that schools are closed so it looks likely that schools will be open tomorrow.

The EDB issued an urgent announcement for all families in Hong Kong:

“Classes of all day schools, including secondary schools, primary schools, special schools, kindergartens, and kindergarten-cum-child care centres, are suspended tomorrow (September 8).

Cyclone Tapah: Classes suspended across Hong Kong on September 8.

The English Schools Foundation (ESF), the largest provider of English-language education in Hong Kong, has also posted on its website this message:

“Schools closed on 8 September. In light of the adverse weather, EDB has announced that all day schools are suspended on 8 September 2025. Your child should not attend school.”

Schools are posting messages of the closures due to the weather on social media.

Hong Kong is not alone in closing schools due to the weather.

In places prone to severe weather like snowstorms or hurricanes, closing is essential to protect students and staff from dangerous conditions. For instance, in the UK, schools have snow days when heavy snowfall makes travel unsafe. Elsewhere in the Middle East, countries like Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar have shut schools for a day or two due to storms and heavy rain.

Follow the Hong Kong Observatory for weather bulletins throughout the day.
