According to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday, the Italian government has not yet decided whether to withdraw from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) agreement with China and is considering its alternatives.
Italy joined the expansive BRI initiative in 2019 against American objections.
At the end of the year, the accord is up for renewal, and Meloni said that parliament will be part in negotiations concerning its future. “We haven’t made a choice yet. During a visit to Prague, Meloni reiterated that she had initially opposed the decision to join the BRI and that the issue was still open.
